Remembering the Golden Jet: A Celebration of Bobby Hull
Published in Hardcover by Raincoast Books (September, 2003)
Authors: Craig MacInnis and Craig Maclnnis
Average review score:

MacInnis Does it Again
The "Remembering..." series transcends normal biography by showcasing top quality journalist's recollections with statistics and insights into the player and their game.

Remembering the Golden Jet is no different. From Bobby Hull's early days playing minor hockey, to his watershed defection from the NHL to play for Winnipeg, a move that would rock the hockey world and force the league to re-evaluate it's salary policy forever.

For Blackhawks fans this book charts the progress of a player who was feared by goalies everywhere for his blistering slapshot.

I have read every Bobby Hull book out there, and nothing comes close in it's insights, in it's recognition of Hull as a true Legend of the game, as this beautifully designed book.

I can't recommend it highly enough.

Renaissance Magic and the Return of the Golden Age: The Occult Tradition and Marlowe, Jonson, and Shakespeare
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (June, 1992)
Author: John S. Mebane
Average review score:

A Magical treasure of information
I bought this book in the hopes of becoming more familiar with some of the "mystic" concepts frequently referred to in the works of Shakespeare, Jonson and Marlowe. The use of magic and potents, signs from the heaven's, dreams and other alchemic elements were used in plays and writings of this time. The primary examples used are Shakespeare's "The Tempest" and Marlowe's "Dr. Faustus."

Not only does the book give you information about these artists, it provides some wonderful general information about the whole Italian Renaissance and how the works of the humanistic, NeoPlantonics and Occultists effected the writings many excellent literarti of the time--and not just in Italy. Mebane discusses the works of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, Cornelius Agrippa, Paracelsus, Marsilio Fincio, Guilliame Postel, and England's own, John Dee among others.

These writings, thoughts and beliefs and the people who attempted to understand and use "magical" concepts, put themselves at considerable political and personal risk during this time. Bacon, Marlowe were scrutinized. Raleigh spent time in prison. After all, it was the beginning of the great witch hunts of the next several hundred years.

Much of what the Renaissiance writer considered occult, we would more probably view as the early beginnings of science. For example, they considered mathematics a "magical" They were intrigued by the Cabala, old pagan religions, astrology and music.

For the educated man of the times, the occult was part of a dream to recapture "lost knowledge" and return to a "golden age of magic." The English Renaissance thinkers and writers also believed that returning to this age would create a more civilized and humane world.

Wonderful, fun, spiritual, creative, educational and very thought-provoking. Not a frivolous book and defintely a serious "read". The information for a generalist such as myself was as mesmerizing as the ideas Professor Mebane discusses in this book. The author also includes an extensive list of resources that I found very helpful. What a pleasure find for the writer, philosopher or anyone interested in this period of history.

My son's favorite
My son is 12 years old now. It was his favorite book as a toddler, and he remembers it to this day. The pictures are vivid and he was able to "read" this book at a very early age! I wish it was still available so I could buy it for baby and birthday gifts for others.

Ride the wild wind
Short stories by Jackie French are great to read. These stories are about horses through time the first story set around 4,000 BCE to the last story set in the 1950's/1960's. Margaret Power illustrated my edition of the book, and i just love her work! My favorite story in the book is called "Strangers on horseback". It's about a slave boy in ancient Greece. Check it out if you like stories of people and horses interacting. :)

A Jewel
This amazing book should stand as a model for historians, environmentalists and poets. The language is exquisite, the metaphors glimmering and the people are "real." A true joy to read and savor.

Having newly moved to Tampa, this book is the invitation I need to feel welcomed in an environment very different from the Tennessee I left. The significance of PLACE is celebrated.

A MUST for anybody interested in Spanish Golden Age books
I highly recommend this book to everybody interested in Golden Age literature, chivalry books or Don Quixote. To read Dr. Eisenberg means to both learn and enjoy. The book gives the reader a most complete view of what chivalry books really were, and offers a lot of interesting new aspects about them, as well as new keys for a better understanding of Don Quixote.

A Treasure for Keeping
I bought this book as a keeper because I was told it was a pretty extensive offering of the collection. Yes, it is that but it is also beautiful laid out and with just enough text for the interested.

If you are looking for a book to educate you on the less seen objects of the collection this is the one to have. An excellent addition to a Buckingham Palace guide.

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer: The Christmas Hero (Special Edition Coloring Book)
Published in Paperback by Golden Books Pub Co Inc (August, 2000)
Author: Golden Books
Average review score:

Highest recommendation.
During the holiday season, my 2-year-old, my 5-year-old, my wife and I spend many evenings coloring in front of our Christmas tree. This is one of the few coloring books that is truly enjoyed by all. It is based on the classic television show and has 84 pages (rare for a "name brand" like Rudolph) of large, easy to color pictures. The pictures are well drawn and accurately depict all the classic characters, Sam, Herbie, Santa, etc. The book follows the original TV storyline from beginning to end with a few easy to read sentences on each page. There are also a few puzzles like decoding and word search, but nowhere near enough to clutter the book or interfere with coloring or the storyline. I have bought over 20 Christmas coloring books in the past 3 years; this is my family's favorite. I'll be buying it again, so we can start anew next year.
